How is your personal political?

Dear reader,

Some people say three things should never be discussed: politics, religion, and money. But, how do you separate yourself from something with such a powerful impact on your daily life? The answer is you don’t.

The personal is political.

We can’t veer away from tough conversations. We can’t ignore the ways that politics and public policy have personal implications. We can’t pretend that our backgrounds, religions, identities, and socio-economic statuses do not play a role in our political affiliations.

So here I am, declaring up front, that this is personal for me.

I am a writer, learner, and observer fascinated by the way policy shapes the lives of everyday people. As a Black woman and native of Northern Virginia I am particularly interested in how marginalized groups navigate the U.S. political sphere. I am a Christian and I grew up in the Black Baptist Church as the daughter of an elementary school teacher and a preacher. I am also a member of Gen Z, as a 21 year old college student at the University of Virginia. If you haven’t guessed yet, I am also a progressive democrat.

I’m not going to pretend to be neutral. But I can promise to always be authentic, empathize with others, and hear out all sides of the story. This is a place for truth and honest conversation.

It’s about to get personal, and political.

With love,

Victoria Hodge
